BIKING BIRDER I March 15th 2010 Brambling Wake Up Call and then a Cycle to Minehead

Happy Birthday Sis! 21 today, 21 today - we wish!

Awoken by the sound of Bramblings; a pair were singing in the beech tree above the tent. I poked my head out to look and found a frosty scene with the sun just rising. In the gloom of the previous evening I had found the corner of a field just east of Exford on Exmoor. Tawny Owl had hooted in the night and a wader called whilst I lay in my sleeping bag in the morning that I did not recognise. My back was feeling a bit better but that was probably painkilling tablets giving me some relief.

Down into Wheddon Cross and then Dunster, around to Minehead to find the wonderful Minehead Youth Hostel. Tucked away in thick woodland away from the seaside town, the Youth Hostel was delightful and a poster told of Heath Fritillary butterflies being there in the summer; Heath Fritillaries being one of the few British butterflies not on my British Butterfly list.
