BIKING BIRDER I April 16th 2010 Sunrise to Sunset cycling Welsh Country Lanes

April 16th 2010

Grieg   Peer Gynt Suite   Morning

Woke early and in the semi darkness, decided to climb the reserve's hill to watch the sunrise from the summit.

Down once more, I spent the morning exploring the beautiful and bird song-filled RSPB reserve.

Packing the tent away in the warm Spring sunshine, time to move onto towards Bluith Wells and beyond.

Heading north west I followed the road leaving the reserve and encountered steep hills, leading to magnificent views over the high hills.

Enjoying the views a little too much and getting giddy from the frequent downhill plunges, I was going a little too fast at a bend in the road and was almost hit by an on-coming car!

Now what were the chances that the car would contain two RSPB employees down to monitor Welsh birds for the summer and on their way to a remote Welsh cottage?

Incredible coincidence, they forgive this errant cyclist and together we chatted about birds for a while.

A whole afternoon and early evening spent cycling along almost totally deserted Welsh country lanes, with a sign stating a Devil's Staircase was nearby at one stop. the road eventually came across a very busy road leading from Llanwyrtd Wells towards Bluith Wells.

Cycled along the A road to Bluith Wells, crossing a large bridge that looked down on the crystal-clear waters of an unpolluted River Wye, I heading north towards Rhayder.

As dusk approached, I saw a depression in an adjacent field that would render my tent unseeable from the road if I chose to camp there for the night. By negotiating the five bar gate, I tucked in my secret little corner of the field by erecting my tent and tucking into me sleeping bag. So ended a beautiful day, that started from a high hilltop and ended with me lying in my sleeping bag with the tent flap open, with me wondering what was missing from the clear blue sky.
