BIKING BIRDER I June 19th 2010 Positive Thinking! The Ladies From Leighton Moss RSPB Reserve

June 19th 2010

Great Tits on t-shirts and Kiss me Quack at Leighton Moss. Well, I was met at Heysham, despite the boat being over an hour late in due to a rather low tide.

Five attractive, young ladies, Jen, Larraine, Rachel, Annabelle and Dagmar were on the quay, shouting “Biking Birder,” as I came up the ramp off the boat. I had been invited by leather clad motorcyclists, NOT bikers as they like to be known, to ride with them. On the way over the waves we had talked about our reasons for travel and they wanted to show me respect. My street cred was totally smashed on the appearance of the wonderful, cheekily-clad girls at the top of the ramp. Their arms aloft, they each wore one from the RSPB t-shirt range. ‘I’ve got Great Tits,’ declared one. ‘Fancy a Shag,’ declared another. Saucy!

The name ‘biker,’ by the way, I feel should be reserved for cyclists. After all, we cyclists ride a bicycle, not a motorbike. Everyone wears a uniform and everyone has a label. I am The Biking Birder.

What a wonderful way to come back into England. I felt like kissing the ground. I am way too shy to kiss the girls!

We cycled to the Eric Morecambe statue and to their great credit, the girls sang 'Positive Thinking' magnificently. Thanks Harry, a passing tourist roped into the job, for holding the camera so well! The video is available to watch on YouTube. Go watch it, sing along and laugh and then make this your mantra for life. Maybe exclude the drinking part. I think of it as fruit juice and never alcohol! Controversially maybe, I would love to see people use Cannabis over alcoholic drinks. How many potheads have your heard of who abuse their partners, attack their children or act as anti-social hooligans when out on the town or at a football match? Legalise Cannabis!

Ironically, my next port of call was a pub! A quick shandy and donuts for us all before arriving at Leighton Moss RSPB reserve. Now these girls were not ardent cyclist so for them to have cycled thirty miles there and back was wonderful and shows what amazing characters they all were. To say it was fun and a privilege to be with them all, would be an understatement. Brilliant!

No time for birding - it was off to the railway station to catch a train to Lancaster for a pint at a pub [you may get the feeling that these people know how to have fun] and then to a restaurant for a meal. Back late but still time to join in with the moth watch going on at the reserve.
