The Duck Song
[Bryant Oden]
A
cold night, indeed, a very cold night camping at Colliford Lake ended my day but I had managed to
see the male Lesser Scaup [149] before retiring. Obligingly
it flew towards me and landed just in front of me on the lake.
The first ever Lesser Scaup in Europe had been found by a couple of my ex-students back in the 1980s.

Jason Oliver and Alex Barter, the latter I talked about back on February the 22nd, had gone birding at Chasewater in Staffordshire. They saw a duck they did not recognise and considering the subtlety of the differences between a Lesser and Greater Scaup, they deserve massive praise and recognition for doing so.
The attached article states that John 'Black Country' Holian saw it first and told the lads. I wonder which way around the encounter was?
My day had started with a cycle ride to
Roadford Lake to see the American Ring-necked Drake [148], seen well
from the large bridge over the northwest end of the huge lake.
